Capt. Armstrong

A Marry Poppins Experience

While spending a wonderful weekend at Florence, I set up on the dock to paint this wonderful fishing boat.  While painting, the wind came up. All of a sudden my (Bestbrella) umbrella slowly lifted out of it's holder and drifted over the dock rail, sailed out about 5 feet and dropped into the water upside down. There it floated, stem side up.  It was like Marry Poppins had taken
hold of it and was flying away.  I was along side the dock, about 15 feet above the water and no way down to retrieve the umbrella. Fortunately a kind gentleman came over and said he had a 30 foot tow line with a clip on the end and maybe we could fish it out.  After 3-4 casts I finally caught  it and managed to retrieve it.
Now I have a lanyard attached to the system so "Lesson Learned".

MY visit to Bend

My wife and I went to Bend for a few days.  While I was there, I was able to capture in Pastel the Mirror Pond Park in downtown Bend.  While I was painting this a young man started casting a lure for awhile and within 15 minutes he held up a 16" Rainbow.  He said "want this for your dinner?"  It would have taken me all day to catch one like that. I did however manage to do a painting that passes.  I plan on returning this summer and paint it again in WMO's.

Here was my entry painting from last years 2015-2016 of Porters Annual Artists contest.  The painting is sitting in a wine box.  I was luck to win First Place. There were 47 artists that entered.
This view is in the back, patio dinning area. a great spot for summer evening dinning.  My favorite dinning place in Southern Oregon.

Wow.  It's been quit a long time since my last entry.  So I'll try to get up to date.  have had some success with Gauche and will try some more this summer.  In the mean time i have had some fun doing oils... water miscible oils aka. WMO's.  I LOVE them.  I was an easy transition for me because of my experience with oils and watercolors.  This I believe is the best of both worlds.  My main concern was finding the  "best" surface or panel Vs. canvas.  I'm not there yet.  Leaning toward hard panels so far.
I will start with some of my earlier works in small plein air sizes.  Have a good start on stock now so I will try some sales this summer.

This was a fun place to paint.  Pennington Farms  A group from my PASSO group painted there and using WMO's I was able to work small, fast and carry less materials.  This is a site that sells great berries/jams all grown in this field.  There are lots of fun signage but I chose to leave them out for simplicity.  Just off of HWY 234 out of Jackson and almost to Grants Pass. Thanks for looking.
